DEAR SIR —

The late Mr. Dick­ens com­mu­ni­cat­ed to me some gen­er­al out­lines for his scheme for Edwin Drood, but it was at a very early state in the de­vel­op­ment of the idea, and what he said bore main­ly upon the early por­tion of the title. Edwin Drood was never to reap­pear, he hav­ing be mur­dered by Gasper (sic!). The girl Rosa not hav­ing been re­al­ly at­tached to Edwin, was not to lament his loss very long, and was, I be­lieve, to admit the sailor, Mr. Tar­tar, to sup­ply his place. ...
